Pomising Ireland

Following on from a number of successful pilot workshops in 2011, during the winter of 2012/13 Void hosted its second season of Small Worlds moving image arts workshops for the primary school age group using new equipment funded by the Irelands fund ‘Promising Ireland’ campaign.

Combining basic digital technology and their own objects and toys, children explored the theme of Small Worlds. All workshops (both gallery-based and at local primary schools) emphasized hands-on experience with the camera and basic editing software, but also exposed children to the work of contemporary artists and filmmakers, discussing basic principles of composition, storytelling, point of view etc. Video, alongside storyboarding and collage work, was used as a tool to encourage children’s close observation of the world around them, and help them express their own point of view.

Small Worlds was developed and delivered by artist, writer and educator Susanne Stich whose practice-based PhD (2010) looked at the Visibilities of Childhood in Moving Image.
